What inspires me?

Many years ago I was fortunate enough to be taught and influenced by Audrey Corwin Wright who was the essence of a modern sculptor who instilled a love of form that influences everything I do.

AVL Unveils Newest Art

Fletcher, NC, July 13, 2009 – Friday marked the opening of the newest Art in the Airport exhibit at Asheville Regional Airport. The show, which runs through October 27, 2009, showcases the artwork of nine local artists.

On display in this exhibit are more than 30 original pieces of artwork, including ceramic sculpture and functional pottery, oil paintings, photography, watercolors and pastels.

“Art in airports is a growing trend – one that was noted by USA Today just this week – and we are pleased to provide a cultural experience for our guests through this program,” says Lew Bleiweis, A.A.E., Airport Director. “The caliber of artwork on display is outstanding and certainly enriches the aesthetics of the airport and the travel experience of our passengers.”

The Art in the Airport gallery is located on the pre-security side of the airport terminal and is open to the public during the airport’s hours of operation. Artwork can also be found in the Bag Claim area near Guest Services.

Art in the Airport spotlights the work of local artists on a rotating basis, with exhibits lasting approximately 120 days. The application deadline for the next exhibit is October 2, 2009. Interested artists may visit www.flyavl.com or e-mail for more information.

Local artists take off at Asheville airport exhibit

Granted, the Art in the Airport exhibit has a slight advantage over other galleries in the region: The Asheville Regional Airport flies thousands of natives and visitors right to its doors. view article »

Earth Goddesses

What I am trying to achieve with the Goddesses is the feeling of the essence of femininity. Not from a modern point of view… I’m not interested in charm or style or flirtatious coyness. It is femininity in all of its fecundity that I want to convey… its fruitfulness, its richness, its nurturing strength and its fertility.

Animals

During the past couple of years, the animals I have chosen to sculpt are usually rhinoceros, polar bears, and pigs. They all have the kind of body type that I love to work on… large wide and curvaceous… perfect for an artist interested in for.

Omo Tribe

I recently discovered the existence of the Omo Valley Tribes of Southern Ethiopia through the extraordinary photos of the Surma and Murci tribes done by Hans Silvestre. The Omo Valley is very near to where the remains of Lucy were found in 1973.
